The power button is one of the most frequently used hardware controls on a smartphone. Wear over time causes it to stop registering presses, become sticky, or depress without springing back. Replacing it restores reliable power on, power off, and screen wake functionality.

What You Will Need

  • Replacement power button flex cable or button assembly (model-specific)
  • Precision screwdrivers
  • Plastic pry tools and spudger
  • Tweezers
  • Heat gun or hairdryer

Step 1 — Confirm the Button is Faulty

Before replacing, clean around the button with isopropyl alcohol — debris under the button cap is a common cause of sticking. If the button physically depresses but the phone does not respond, the fault is in the flex cable or switch beneath it.

Step 2 — Open the Device

Power off. Depending on the model, the power button flex cable may be accessible from the rear panel or may require screen removal. Open the appropriate side and disconnect the battery before proceeding.

Step 3 — Remove the Power Button Assembly

Locate the power button flex cable running along the phone's side frame to the motherboard. Unscrew any retaining brackets, disconnect the flex cable from the motherboard, and slide the button and flex assembly out of the side frame channel.

Step 4 — Install the New Assembly

Thread the new flex cable along the side frame channel, seat the button cap in the frame cutout, and route the cable to the motherboard connector. Press the connector in firmly and replace all bracket screws.

Step 5 — Test and Seal

Reconnect the battery and test power on, power off, and screen wake without reassembling fully. Confirm the button clicks crisply with good tactile feedback before sealing the device.
