Touch sensitivity problems cover a range of symptoms: the screen requires unusually firm pressure to register touches, misregisters taps (you tap one spot but another activates), or responds sluggishly with a noticeable delay between touch and action. These are distinct from ghost touches or a fully unresponsive screen — the screen responds, but not accurately or reliably.
Common Causes
Touch sensitivity issues stem from a poorly calibrated digitiser, a thick or poorly fitted screen protector interfering with the capacitive layer, a software setting reducing sensitivity, residual static charge on the panel, or a partially damaged digitiser registering inputs inaccurately.
Software Fixes First
Check the Touch Sensitivity setting. Many Android phones — particularly Samsung devices — have a dedicated touch sensitivity toggle under Settings > Display > Touch Sensitivity. Enabling this boosts sensitivity specifically for use with screen protectors. If you recently applied a new protector and sensitivity dropped, this is likely the fix.
Clean the screen and your fingers. The capacitive touchscreen detects the electrical charge from your fingertip. Moisturiser, grease, or even very dry skin in a cold climate can reduce the conductivity of your touch and make the screen seem less responsive. Wipe the screen and your fingers with a clean, dry cloth.
Restart the phone. Clears any temporary digitiser driver state that may be causing input lag or inaccuracy.
Remove and reapply the screen protector. Air bubbles between the protector and the screen create pressure inconsistencies that cause the screen to misread touch location. Remove the protector, clean the screen thoroughly, and either reapply it properly or replace it.
Calibrating the Digitiser
Some Android phones offer a touch calibration utility in the settings or via a dial code (often *#*#2664#*#* for Samsung). Running a calibration can restore accuracy on screens that have drifted. Not all models support this — check whether a calibration utility exists for your specific device before proceeding.
Hardware Causes
A digitiser with physical damage — whether from a drop, moisture, or manufacturing degradation — will misregister touches regardless of software settings. The misregistration tends to be consistent and localised to a specific zone of the screen. If cleaning, recalibrating, and removing the screen protector do not resolve the issue, the screen assembly requires replacement.
Check the touch sensitivity setting and the screen protector before anything else. These two factors cause the majority of touch accuracy complaints and both have immediate, cost-free fixes.
