The power key (also called the side key or lock button) controls screen activation and device power states. On modern phones it may also trigger the voice assistant or house a fingerprint sensor. A sticky or non-functional key needs replacement to restore these essential functions.

What You Will Need

  • Replacement power key / flex cable assembly (model-specific)
  • Precision screwdrivers
  • Plastic pry tools and spudger
  • Tweezers
  • Heat gun

Step 1 — Assess the Fault

Test whether the key is physically stuck or electronically unresponsive. Use accessibility features such as AssistiveTouch (iOS) or the power button accessibility menu (Android) to manage the phone temporarily while planning the repair.

Step 2 — Open the Device

Power off and open the chassis. On most phones the power key flex runs inside the side frame and connects to the motherboard beneath the battery. Open the rear panel, disconnect the battery, and locate the key assembly.

Step 3 — Remove and Replace the Key Assembly

Unscrew any metal brackets over the flex cable connector. Disconnect the cable, then slide the key and flex assembly out from the side frame. Thread the new assembly in, seating the key cap flush with the frame cutout, and reconnect the flex cable.

Step 4 — If the Key Includes a Fingerprint Sensor

Some power keys integrate a fingerprint sensor. After installing a new key with an integrated sensor, you will need to re-enroll fingerprints in Settings before biometric unlock will function again.

Step 5 — Test All Functions

Test power on/off, screen wake, and — where applicable — fingerprint recognition and voice assistant activation before sealing the phone.
