A worn or damaged charging port causes intermittent charging, loose cable connections, or complete failure to charge. On most modern phones the charging port is a replaceable daughterboard that also carries the microphone and sometimes the headphone jack.
What You Will Need
- Replacement charging port / charging board (model-specific)
- Phillips and Pentalobe screwdrivers
- Plastic pry tools and spudger
- Tweezers
- Isopropyl alcohol and lint-free cloth
- Anti-static wrist strap
Step 1 — Power Off and Open the Phone
Power off the device completely. Open the back cover or screen depending on the phone's construction. Disconnect the battery connector first before handling any other components — this prevents accidental shorts.
Step 2 — Locate and Remove the Charging Board
The charging port board sits at the bottom of the phone, usually secured by two to four screws. Before removing it, disconnect all flex cables attached to it — these typically include the battery cable, main board connector, and microphone cable. Note the routing of each cable.
Step 3 — Remove the Old Port
Unscrew the charging board and lift it out. On some models it is also held by adhesive — warm the area gently and use a spudger to release it. Inspect the board for corrosion; if corrosion is present on nearby contacts, clean with isopropyl alcohol and a fine brush.
Step 4 — Install the Replacement
Place the new charging board into position, route the flex cables as they were originally, and secure the screws. Reconnect all flex cables firmly.
Step 5 — Test Before Sealing
Reconnect the battery, power on, and test charging with multiple cables before closing up the phone. Confirm the connection is firm and charging begins immediately when a cable is inserted. Then seal the device and allow adhesive to cure.
