HDMI has become the universal standard for audio-visual connectivity, carrying high-definition and 4K/8K video alongside multichannel audio — including Dolby Atmos and DTS:X — on a single cable. As the most used and most stressed connector on modern AV equipment, HDMI ports are correspondingly the most frequently damaged and one of the most commonly repaired items in the audio electronics workshop. Pro-Logic Technologies provides expert HDMI port repair services for AV receivers, soundbars, amplifiers, and other audio equipment across Nairobi.

How HDMI Ports Fail

HDMI ports fail in several distinct ways, each with different repair implications.

Physical damage to the port — the HDMI port is a surface-mounted component, typically soldered directly to the main circuit board. When a cable is inserted at an angle, when a cable is pulled out forcefully, or when equipment is moved with a cable still inserted, the physical stress can crack the solder joints holding the port to the board, or deform the port body and internal contact spring fingers. A physically damaged port may be intermittent, produce a weak signal with artefacts, or fail completely. Physical port replacement is the repair required.

Broken solder joints on the port — even without obvious physical damage, the solder joints on HDMI ports can develop micro-cracks through repeated thermal cycling and the mechanical stress of cable insertion and removal. Cold solder joints cause intermittent signal failure or complete HDMI malfunction. We rework the solder joints on the port under magnification, applying fresh solder to restore reliable electrical connections.

Failed HDMI switching IC — in AV receivers and switching amplifiers with multiple HDMI inputs, a dedicated HDMI switching integrated circuit manages the routing of HDMI signals between inputs and outputs. These ICs can fail due to power surge, electrostatic discharge, or old age, causing one or all HDMI inputs to fail. Switching IC replacement is a more complex repair requiring specialist rework equipment and component sourcing.

HDMI ARC/eARC failure — in soundbars and AV receivers that use HDMI ARC or eARC for audio return from a connected television, the ARC circuitry can fail independently of the normal HDMI video path. Symptoms include the soundbar not receiving audio from the TV via ARC, or intermittent dropout of the ARC connection. We diagnose and repair ARC-specific faults including failed CEC/ARC controller ICs and incorrect EDID (Extended Display Identification Data) programming.

HDMI 2.0 and 2.1 Specific Issues

HDMI 2.1 ports — required for 4K/120Hz and 8K content — carry significantly higher data rates than previous HDMI versions and place greater demands on the board-level design of the connector and associated circuitry. HDMI 2.1 faults can include signal integrity issues at high bandwidth, failures of the HDMI 2.1 retimer ICs, and cable compatibility issues. Pro-Logic Technologies has experience with HDMI 2.1 fault diagnosis and repair.

Our HDMI Repair Process

HDMI port repair requires precision equipment — a high-quality soldering station with fine-pitch tips, a hot air rework station for surface-mounted ICs, and a microscope for inspection. Pro-Logic Technologies is equipped for all levels of HDMI repair from joint reflow to port replacement to IC replacement.
