A black screen with continuing audio typically indicates the television is receiving and processing the audio signal but failing to display the video. This separation often points to issues within the display pipeline rather than the overall system. First, confirm the input source is active and the connected device, such as a cable box or streaming stick, is outputting video. A malfunctioning HDMI cable can carry audio while failing to transmit video, so try replacing the cable or using a different HDMI port on the TV.

Backlight failure is a common cause in LED and LCD televisions. The backlight illuminates the display panel, and if it fails, the screen appears black even though the panel may still be receiving an image. Shine a flashlight at an angle on the screen in a dark room. If you can faintly see the picture, the backlight is likely defective. Backlight issues often stem from faulty LED strips, a failed inverter board, or power supply problems. In such cases, professional repair is usually required, as opening the TV voids warranties and involves handling high-voltage components.

Another possibility is a failure in the TV main board or T-Con board, which processes video signals. If the main board fails to send video data to the panel, the result is a black screen. Similarly, a damaged T-Con board can prevent the display from receiving the correct signals. These components require specialized diagnostic equipment to confirm failure and are best serviced by technicians.

Software glitches can also cause this issue. A frozen operating system or corrupted firmware may prevent video output while audio continues. Try power cycling the TV by unplugging it for several minutes, then plugging it back in. If the TV has a reset function, use it to restore factory settings. For smart TVs, check for available firmware updates through the settings menu or manufacturer website, as updates often address known bugs affecting video display.

Input settings and resolution mismatches can also produce a black screen. If the connected device outputs a resolution or refresh rate the TV cannot support, it may refuse to display the image. Access the TV settings via a different input or remote app to verify the resolution matches the TV capabilities. Some TVs display an error message in such cases, but others simply show a black screen.
