Seals: Mobile Phone Spares
Seals in the context of mobile phone spares are the waterproofing and dust-proofing gaskets and membranes that prevent moisture and particulate ingress into sensitive areas of the phone. They include the acoustic seals around the earpiece and loudspeaker, the button membrane seals, and the gasket that lines the display frame perimeter in IP-rated devices.
Types and Materials
Acoustic seals are foam or rubber gaskets that seat the earpiece and loudspeaker against the chassis apertures, preventing sound from leaking around the driver and ensuring it is directed through the correct opening. These also prevent dust from entering the driver housing from within the chassis.
IP-rated waterproofing uses compressed rubber gaskets — particularly around the charging port, SIM tray slot, and display frame perimeter — that are specified by the manufacturer to achieve the IP67 or IP68 dust and water resistance rating. These seals are compressed when the phone is assembled and held in position by the display or back cover clamping force.
Condition After Repair
Any repair that opens an IP-rated phone disturbs the original seals. Replacing displays, batteries, or charging ports on IP67 and IP68 phones requires fitting new seals of the correct specification to restore any level of moisture resistance. Aftermarket seals do not restore the manufacturer's IP certification, but fitting correct replacement seals at minimum restores the primary seal function against incidental splashes.
