How to Update Sony TV Software
Sony TVs running Android TV or Google TV receive periodic software updates that improve performance, patch security vulnerabilities, and occasionally introduce new features. Updating is a simple menu-based process, though it does require an internet connection.
Step 1: Connect to the Internet
Confirm your Sony TV is connected to Wi-Fi or Ethernet. You can check this under Settings > Network & Internet. A stable connection is essential since system updates can be several hundred megabytes in size.
Step 2: Open System Settings
Press the Home button on your remote, then go to Settings, represented by a gear icon. From there, select System (sometimes labeled Device Preferences depending on your model and software version).
Step 3: Find About and System Update
Scroll to About, then look for System Software Update or simply Software Update. Select this option to have the TV check Sony's servers for the latest available version.
Step 4: Download and Install
If an update is available, select Update Now or Download. The TV will download the file in the background, and you can continue using the TV while this happens in most cases. Once downloaded, you'll be prompted to install it, which usually triggers a restart.
Step 5: Confirm the Update Installed
After the TV restarts, return to Settings > System > About and check the software version number to confirm it matches the latest release. You can compare this against Sony's official support documentation for your specific model.
Common Issues and Fixes
- Update not appearing: Some Sony models stagger update rollouts, meaning not every TV receives an update at the same time. Check back in a few days.
- Download fails repeatedly: Try moving your router closer to the TV, or switch from Wi-Fi to a wired Ethernet connection for a more stable transfer.
- TV frozen after update: Hold the power button on the TV itself (not the remote) for about 10 seconds to force a restart.
- Apps crashing after an update: Individual streaming apps may also need updating separately through the Google Play Store or Sony's app store, which is different from the system software update.
Why Updates Matter
Beyond new features, software updates often fix bugs related to app crashes, HDMI handshake issues, and Bluetooth remote pairing. Sony recommends checking for updates every one to two months, particularly if you notice the TV behaving unusually or if a specific streaming app stops working correctly.
