How to Replace a Phone Volume Keys
Volume keys are among the most used physical controls on a smartphone. Repeated pressing over years causes the internal dome switches within the flex cable to lose their tactile response. A complete volume key flex cable replacement restores crisp, reliable button feedback.

Step 1 — Diagnose the Issue
Confirm whether the keys are mechanically stuck or electronically unresponsive. Stuck keys can sometimes be freed by cleaning with isopropyl alcohol. Unresponsive keys despite clean presses require flex cable replacement.
Step 2 — Open and Access the Side Frame
Power off, open the chassis, and disconnect the battery. Volume key flex cables run along the side frame of the phone and are often held by one or two small screws plus adhesive along the cable path.
Step 3 — Remove the Old Cable
Disconnect the flex from the motherboard connector. Peel the cable away from any adhesive holds along the frame. Slide the key caps out of the frame cutouts — they are often separate plastic caps that sit over the flex cable switches.
Step 4 — Install the Replacement
Route the new flex cable along the frame channel, press the key caps into their frame openings, and connect the cable end to the motherboard. Apply a small strip of adhesive where the cable runs along the frame to keep it from shifting.
Step 5 — Verify and Close
Power on and test both keys for tactile response and correct function. Reassemble fully and press the rear panel down evenly to reseat all adhesive.
