Gaskets overlap with seals in the mobile repair vocabulary — the terms are used interchangeably in Nairobi's market — but in strict technical usage, a gasket is a deformable material placed between two mating surfaces to prevent leakage under compression. In phones, gaskets appear around buttons, the SIM tray, the charging port, internal component housing, and the camera module.
Camera Module Gaskets
Camera module gaskets are rubber rings that surround each camera lens aperture, sealing the module housing against the back chassis to prevent dust from settling on the internal lens surfaces. These gaskets are included in quality replacement camera module assemblies. A camera replaced without its gasket will show dust ingress on photos within days of use in dusty environments.
Button and Port Gaskets
Buttons on waterproof phones have individual rubber gaskets that compress between the button mechanism and the frame aperture, preventing water ingress through the button cutout.
